Film festival begins today

MUSCAT Indian filmstar Amitabh Bachchan arrived in Muscat on Friday as one of the star guests of the eight-day Sixth Muscat International Film Festival (Miff) that opens at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel on Saturday. Around 20 countries are participating in the Miff.

On Sunday, Bachchan will be presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the Indian cinema at the same venue. 

A total of 45 films are participating in the festival which will be inaugurated  by HH Sayyid Haitham Bin Tariq Al Said, the Minister of Heritage and Culture, and HE Sayyid Ali Bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, the Minister of the Diwan of Royal Court.

At a press conference on his arrival at Muscat International Airport, Bachchan said: “Every award is a signal honour for me, my country and for the Indian film industry”.

Other high-profile guests attending the Miff are Resul Pookutty, who won an Oscar award for sound technology in the film “Slumdog Millionaire”, Hollywood director Antonino Sucameli, Egyptian actress  Masdah Azahbah, actors Franco Nero  and Sanjay Dutt.
