828 died in 6,177 accidents over 10 months
MUSCAT There was an increase in the number of road accident deaths during the first 10 months of this year. According to the reports issued by the Directorate-General for Traffic, 828 people were killed in 6,177 road accidents during the period.

The reports said that there was a decrease in the number of road accidents, but the casualty rate was high as compared to the corresponding period last year. Total number of 8,355 persons suffered injuries in these accidents.

The reports also said that 790 persons were killed in 6,480 road accidents during the first 10 months of 2008.  

Over 15 persons were killed in road accidents during last week. The number of car accident deaths from the beginning of this month till last Friday has touched 36.

Al Batinah region recorded six deaths during last week, while two deaths were recorded in the governorates of Muscat, Dhofar, Al Buraimi and Al Dakhilyiah regions. One death was recorded in Al Sharqiyah region. These accidents caused injuries to 147 peoples.

Over 121 accidents occurred during last week, including 64 car collisions, 22 tumble accidents, 19 collisions with fixed objects and 16 run-over cases. The gruesome among these accidents occurred in the Wilayat of Thumrait in Dhofar governorate, in which one person was killed and four suffered injuries in the collision of cars.
