Larijani holds talks with Meshaal
DAMASCUS/ROME A senior Iranian politician met Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Damascus late on Wednesday.

In Rome, Israeli President Shimon Peres said Gaza must not become a “satellite of Iran”, in an interview published on Thursday by an Italian daily La Repubblica.

Also on Thursday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said some governments in the region had been wrong not to do more to stop Israeli attacks on Gaza and would face “humiliation” in future at Israel’s hands for failing to act.

Ali Larijani, speaker of parliament and one of the major figures in Iran, met Meshaal and several high level officials from Hamas at the Iranian Embassy in the Syrian capital, witnesses said. The meeting stretched into the early hours of Thursday, with no details emerging from the deliberations. Larijani earlier met leaders of Islamic Jihad. Larijani also met President Bashar Al Assad on Wednesday to discuss the “dangerous situation” in Gaza, the official Syrian news agency said.

Peres said in interview: “Our goals are clear: We do not want to make Gaza a satellite of Iran, and we don’t want a ceasefire but the end of the terror.”

He added: “We do not want to prolong the war, and we have no territorial ambitions for Gaza. With this operation, there is a chance for peace.” He said a ceasefire plan proposed by France and Egypt that calls for a resumption of talks between Israel and the Palestinians and dialogue between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas was “a general idea” with the details to be hammered out.

Khamenei said: “Mu-slim nations and governments should realise that the nature and main goal of the arrogant system, (reflected in) Israeli crimes, is to completely destroy resistance in the region and dominate the Middle East.”

“Everybody should know that, just like in the past, when Iran has offered all its help to the oppressed Palestinian people, from now on it will do anything necessary in this regard,” he added.
