| Innovative projects by youths get DSIR aid |
By Our Correspondent
Two innovative projects set up by youths, who shunned lucrative job offers, have been selected for the Federal Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) funding under its Technopreneurship Promotion Programme (TePP).
The state government-owned Technopark hosts both projects at its Technology Business Incubation Centre (T-BIC).
Velozeta, started by mechanical engineer Aaron Joseph George, has been awarded Rs1.2 million for its patented six-stroke energy-efficient and pollutant-reducing internal combustion engine architecture project.
Sanjay Vijay Kumar, an industrial engineer, has got Rs800,000 for his firm, Torque, a Mobile Media and Entertainment Company.
The six-stroke technology is scalable from lawnmowers to locomotives, and can be designed to run on different fuel types (including petrol, bio-diesel and ethanol), providing a platform that can compete in any segment of the $250 billion combustion engine market.
The Velozeta engine prototype was tested at the heat engines lab of the Government College of Engineering, and experimentally proved its high efficiency along with dramatic reduction in pollution levels compared to conventional internal combustion engines.
The innovator team comprises five engineers who also undertake engineering design (CAD/CAE & CFD) projects for companies within the country and overseas.
Sanjay Vijay Kumar’s Torque has been developing a Mobile Crime and Accident Reporting Platform that aims at improving the response time during accidents by transmitting images from the accident scene to the control room.
MCARP proposal has been cleared by the Kerala Police for a pilot run in Kochi.
Once the pilot run is complete, the innovation is likely to be implemented in Delhi with modifications. Torque has incorporated another company MobMe which is rated by Nasscom as one of the 100 best companies in India.
RK Nair, CEO, Technopark, said, “Technopark Business Incubation Centre in the last four years has been successful in creating an environment for technopreneurship in Kerala.
The result so far has been amazing and with path-breaking projects from startups like Velozeta and Torque, the future looks extremely promising.”
