MANILA A two-year-old boy and six other people were wounded, two seriously, when a powerful explosion believed to have been set off by suspected Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf extremists ripped through a passenger bus in Zamboanga City in volatile Mindanao, police reported on Friday.
Senior Superintendent Jaime Mejia, the police chief, said an improvised bomb exploded while the Rural Transit bus was approaching its terminal in a ‘barangay’ (village) in Zamboanga City at about 10pm on Thursday.
The bomb, Mejia said, was believed to have been planted by two men who boarded the bus while on its regular run from Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur province to the port city of Zamboanga.
The explosion was so powerful it ripped off the rear end and baggage compartment of the bus, wounding the boy and the six passengers who were then seated at the back, according to Mejia.
“Based on the descriptions furnished by the passengers and the bus personnel, these fitted those of the suspected Abu Sayyaf extremists we are now hunting down,” Mejia said.
