Fixed, GSM phone subscribers rise
MUSCAT Subscribers of the fixed phone service in the Sultanate rose by 3 per cent to 295,946 at the end of June 2012 from 287,323 at the end of December 2011, according to National Centre for Statistics and Data (NCSD).  

Billed fixed phone service subscribers increased from 215,193 at the end of 2011 to 219,903 at the end of June 2012. Subscribers of pre-paid fixed phone service (Sahl) fell from 26,345 in 2011 to 25,932.

The number of public phones all over the Sultanate stood at 6,801.   

Subscribers of fixed telephone lines in the Governorate of Muscat stood at 138,179 by the end of June 2012, followed by the governorates of South and North Al Batinah at 32,214, the Governorate of Dhofar at 21,852, the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah at 19,970, governorates of South and North Al Sharqiyah at 16,256, Governorate of Al Dhahirah at 7,416, Governorate of Al Buraimi at 6,620, Governorate of Musandam at 2,931 and Governorate of Al Wusta at 397.   

Subscribers of billed and pre-paid GSM service rose 3.7 per cent to 4,987,635 at the end of June 2012 from 4,809,248 at the end of 2011. Billed GSM service subscribers rose by 4 per cent to 449,210 by the end of June 2012 from 432,093 during 2011. Pre-paid GSM service subscribers rose by 3.4 per cent to 4,538,425 from 4,377,155 by the end of 2011.  

Subscribers of phone Internet service fell by 29.5 per cent from 10,846 during 2011 to 7,649 at the end of June 2012. It includes subscribers of billed service (6,527) and subscribers of pre-paid cards (1,122).   

Subscribers of broadband service rose from 78,217 at the end of 2011 to 95,096 at the end of June 2012.    

The total number of Internet service subscribers rose from 2,168,049 during 2011 to 2,647,699 at the end of June 2012.   

The number of leased Internet line subscribers stood at 3,682 at the end of June 2012 compared to 3,670 at the end of 2011.
