| Vocational education centres to admit 4,500 students |
MUSCAT A total of 4,500 male and female students will be admitted to vocational training centres and fishermen rehabilitation institutes for the academic year 2012-2013, according to Her Excellency Dr Muna Bint Salim Al Jardaniyah, Undersecretary at the Manpower Ministry for Technical Education and Vocational Training.
In the first year, students will learn basic skills in English language, maths and IT, besides practical skills for the major of study, she said at a press conference at the Manpower Ministry on Tuesday. In the second year, students will learn practical skills, engineering sciences, engineering drawing, besides basic skills of English language, maths, physics, chemistry, IT and project management. The third year includes advanced programmes, and students will be trained in technical skills, besides basic skills in English language, maths, physics, chemistry, IT and project management.
“After completing three years, graduates will get vocational training diploma, equivalent to the technical education diploma granted by colleges of technology. It means they will have the same financial grade granted by graduates of the colleges of technology,” she said. “Work is under way to equalise academic study hours with the technical education system,” Al Jardaniyah said.
Study programmes at vocational training centres in Al Seeb, Saham, Sur, Ibri, Shinas and Al Buraimi include 11 departments, including mechatronics, electronics, air-conditioning, electricity, auto technology, welding and metal casting, mechanics, operation and maintenance, carpentry, construction, agricultural training, sales, beauty and hair dressing.
Majors at fishermen institutes in Al Khabourah and Salalah include aqua farming, fisheries development, ship construction and repair, navigation technologies, fishing equipment, fish engineering and marine mechanics.
“The ministry has set up a new vocational training centre in the Governorate of Al Buraimi. It will receive the first batch of students for academic year 2012-2013,” she said. “The number of students admitted to colleges of technology for 2012-2013 stood at 10,500, and around 700 students from other categories.”
The estimated cost for buildings of the colleges of technology for the year 2012 will be about 26,935,000 rials compared to 27,351,000 rials for 2013, Al Jardaniyah said.
Fifty instructors at the Colleges of Technology were nominated to get PhD degrees, she said. Work is on to dispatch 35 of them before the year end. The human resources development programme at the colleges of technology includes dispatching 36 technicians to Ireland for bachelor’s degrees.
On development of programmes, she said the number of programmes offered at the colleges of technology for 2011-2012 stands at 37, including 18.9 per cent for the diploma level, 10.8 per cent for advanced diploma and 70.3 per cent for bachelor’s level.
