Grain, sugar prices slightly up: Survey
MUSCAT Average prices of food items varied during the second week of Ramadan, compared to the same period last month (Sha’ban) and the second week of Ramadan last year, according to the weekly survey of major consumer commodities in the Governorate of Muscat conducted by the National Centre for Statistics and Data (NCSD).  

Compared to the same period of the Holy Month of Ramadan last year, prices of longtail tuna fish rose by 24.5 per cent, threadfin by 23 per cent and cod by 4.6 per cent, while prices of kingfish and sardines dropped by 27.8 per cent and 22.6 per cent, respectively.  

In meat and poultry, prices of fresh Pakistani lamb rose by 3.3 per cent in the second week of Ramadan, compared to the same period last month, while fresh Pakistani beef prices fell by 1.5 prices. Prices of other meat were stable.  

Prices of grain and grain products rose slightly, especially certain types of Pakistani basmati rice in the second week of Ramadan compared to the same period last month.

Compared to the same period last year, prices of rice fell, except for two types of Indian Basmati rice, which increased by 8.5 per cent and 5.2 per cent.

Prices of milk and milk products fell in the second week of Ramadan compared to the same period last month, except for prices of some types of fresh milk and dairy products, which rose by 4.1 per cent and 1.7 per cent, respectively.  

The price of one type of local fresh eggs rose by 1.3 per cent in the second week of Ramadan compared to the second week of last month, while the price of other local fresh eggs fell by 2.4 per cent.  

Prices of most oils and fats rose in the second week of the month of Ramadan compared to second week of Ramadan last year by 0.2 per cent and 7.4 per cent.

But prices of dry and canned legumes stabilised in the second week of Ramadan compared to the same period of last month. Prices of beans rose by 7.4 per cent.

Coarse sugar prices rose by 1.5 per cent while prices of sugar cubes fell by 5.2 per cent in the second week of Ramadan, compared to the same period last month. Powdered sugar prices rose by 27.5 per cent and sugar cubes by 24.7 per cent in the second week of Ramadan compared to the same period last year, when it fell by 15.6 per cent.

Coffee and tea prices rose for the second week of Ramadan compared to the same period last month, except prices of two kinds of tea bags and loose tea, which fell by 6.1 per cent and 1.5 per cent, respectively.  

Prices of loose tea and instant coffee fell by 3.9 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively, compared to the same period last Ramadan.

Prices of most fresh fruits rose in the second week of the Ramadan compared to the same period last month by 5.4 per cent to 37.3 per cent. Prices rose over the same period of last Ramadan by 2 per cent and 7.9 per cent.  

Fresh vegetables prices in the second week of Ramadan rose compared to the same period last month, except prices of onions, garlic and potatoes, which fell by 34.4 per cent, 21.4 per cent and 17.8 per cent, respectively. Compared to the same period of Ramadan last year, prices of most fresh vegetables rose by 2.3 per cent and 37.8 per cent.
