MUSCAT HE Sheikh Mohammed Bin Ahmed Al Harthy, State’s Adviser, presided over the honouring ceremony for winners of the Sultan Qaboos Holy Quran Memorisation Contest’s 22nd edition of the year. It was held at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the Wilayat of Bausher on Monday.
The competition was held in five categories including memorisation of the entire Holy Quran with recitation, 25 and 18 consecutive chapters with recitation of one part, and memorisation of 12 and six consecutive chapters of the Holy Quran.
This year’s winners were Said Bin Mselem Al Muhaijari in category one, Mohammed Bin Abdullah Al Mamari in category two, Tariq Bin Mohammed Al Junaibi in category three, Said Bin Salim Al Thani in category four and Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Amri in category five.
In his opening address to the audience comprising ministers, undersecretaries, senior officials and other dignitaries, HE Habib Bin Mohammed Al Riyami, Secretary-General of the Sultan Qaboos Centre for Islamic Studies, highlighted the role of the centre in organising the competition.
He said the contest encouraged study and memorisation of the Holy Quran. It is important to properly articulate, pronounce and understand the verses, which gives true protection, knowledge and freedom to its adherents, he said.
Al Riyami said the competition encourages youths to carry on with the time-honoured traditions of the country’s Islamic heritage and teachings. He praised the efforts of the participants, especially those who excelled, and the patronage of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said.
In his speech, His Eminence Sheikh Ahmed Bin Hamed Al Khalili, Grand Mufti of the Sultanate, highlighted the many blessings that recitation of the Holy Quran brings during the Holy Month of Ramadan. This is the month in which lies Laylatul Qadr (the ‘night of power), a divine gift for believers. It is a month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) and in which the criterion between right and wrong (Al Furqan) was revealed, he added.
A total of 285 male and female competitors of various age groups took part in the competition; 142 of them qualified to the final qualifications after interviews in 17 centres.
A total of 126 competitors qualified to the final qualifications out of 142 as the Sultan Qaboos Centre for Islamic Culture (SQCIC) announced the top 15 winners in the five levels. SQCIC organises the competition in line with the Royal attention accorded by His Majesty the Sultan. The previous competition, conducted in May, included five levels.
These included memorising the Holy Quran with reciting, memorising 24 consecutive parts of Holy Quran, memorising 18 consecutive parts of the Holy Quran and reciting one part, memorising 12 consecutive parts of the Holy Quran and memorising six consecutive parts.
