| Ministers call for focus on development needs |
MUSCAT The Council of Ministers in its meetings held in July reviewed development needs of governorates and urged authorities to submit details of specific programmes.
It also urged officials to conduct more visits to regions to study the progress of development programmes and needs of citizens and report to the Council, according to a statement. It called for periodic evaluation of the performance of directorates and departments with regard to the scheduled programmes.
The meetings reviewed cooperation between the government and the private sector and stressed the need to enhance it. It said the private sector is a key partner in comprehensive development and should be strengthened so that it can accommodate more national manpower. It said the government will allow the private sector to participate in projects that meet the goal of employing national manpower.
The council also studied reports on jobseekers and progress made in employing them in government and private sectors. It found that some youths are reluctant to work in the private sector and instead prefer working in the government sector. This, it said, is one of the challenges facing the government in the recruitment process. The council also urged youths to accept work in all sectors – government or private.
The council examined the interruption of work at some production sites following demands by workers. It said while the demands are legitimate, they should be expressed in a way that is appropriate, benefits all parties, and does not affect productivity, which could have a negative impact on the economy and development. It said demands take some time to be met, when possible, and that is what happened in many cases.
In view of the importance of maintaining stable food prices, the council also reviewed the report of the Food Security Committee and steps taken by concerned authorities. It stressed the importance of identifying commodities vital to food security and the quantity to be kept as reserve for domestic consumption.
The council urged fast implementation of food security projects and the Consumer Protection Law. It reviewed efforts made to ensure stability of fish and meat prices, as well as the stability of grass prices to boost livestock, according to the statement.
The council also approved reduced charges for land for agricultural use.
The council reviewed reasons for delay in awarding approved projects and recommended giving priority in tenders for urgent development and service projects. The council will continue to examine this issue with the Tender Board.
As Oman Air enjoys good reputation internationally and in view of the requirements of the sector, the government will help the airline provide more domestic and international services and facilities.
To ensure efficient delivery of e-government services to beneficiaries, the Council of Ministers has set norms for implementation of e-governance.
The council approved the Sultanate’s Scientific Club joining the Clubs Society affiliated to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
The Council of Ministers also approved organising a multi-language mobile exhibition on role of Omanis in the Islamic and human civilisation.
