| Old OFA system better |
Laila Bint Khalfan Al Rajibiah
MUSCAT Sheikh Saud Bin Hamad Al Rawahi, one of the acclaimed and enlightened figures in the history of the Omani sports, asserted that the earlier mechanism of electing five persons and selecting seven to the 12-member Oman Football Association (OFA) board was better than the present system of electing all board members.
During an interview to Oman Tribune, Saud Al Rawahi said: “I see that it is not useful to fill the 12 seats of OFA board through elections because the candidates for that position work to occupy the position for fame and there is no yardstick to measure their efficiency”.
Elaborating on the OFA elections, Saud Al Rawahi, who has held top positions at the Asian and international levels, said that the old mechanism of selecting seven members to the board was a better system as it gives a chance for chosing suitable and experienced members.
Saud Al Rawahi, who was the first chairman for the Athletics Association (1985), chairman of Oman Football Association (OFA), deputy chairman of Asian Football Confederation and the deputy chairman of Omani Olympic Committee, said that after giving his best to the development of sport he does not intend to work in any of the sports associations.
“I completed my work for my homeland for many years and now I have no intention to return to any work again, but if my homeland needs me so I am ready” he said, adding that he will not accept the position of the chairman of the Omani Olympic Committee, but if he received orders he will agree.
Commenting on the issue of chosing Hani Habib Maki to hold the Olympic flame, Al Rawahi said that there are specific standards to chose players to represent the Sultanate in carrying the flame.
There were many players who deserved to be in London 2012 to hold the flame such as Fatma Al Nabhani, Ali Al Habsi, Barkat Al Harthy, Hamad Al Wahibi, Ahmed Al Harthy, and Mohammed Al Malki.
“All those players raised the name of the Sultanate on the international stage and deserve the honour of carrying the Olympic flame,” he said.
At the end of the interview, Al Rawahi wished all the best to Omani sports.
