3-screen City Cinema opens at Muscat Grand Mall
Staff Reporter

MUSCAT The City Cinema at Muscat Grand Mall (MGM) is the first cinema hall in the world to screen The Amazing Spiderman in 3D.

The screening was scheduled for 11:30pm on Wednesday.

“Moviegoers now have another entertainment hotspot to indulge in their favourite pastime and watch the latest international releases in the latest shopping and dining hub in town — the Muscat Grand Mall,” said Group General Manager for the Jawad Sultan Group of Companies P Chandrasekhr, at a press conference held to announce the screening.

“This is another exciting milestone in City Cinema’s 40-year-old history in the Sultanate.  The group is expanding its footprint in the country with the opening of its fifth multiplex in Muscat Grand Mall in Bausher. This is in addition to its existing venues at Shatti Al Qurum, Ruwi, Sur and Sohar.”

He said the three-screen multiplex is set to become the city’s go-to destination for Hollywood, Bollywood and Arabic movies.

“It has several firsts to its credit.  The new destination is a departure from the existing format of standalone multiplexes to one that is integrated with a shopping mall, providing wholesome entertainment to shoppers and families.”

The new multiplex has three screens with an aggregate seating capacity of 294.  Another first is the introduction of Gold Class – that accommodates up to 24 people in an auditorium, which, while giving the ambience and feel of a home, will have all comforts of a theatre with matching visual and seating comfort.

The introduction of a silver screen at the multiplex is another first, said Chandrasekhr. “This will enable viewers to see extremely sharp and life-like visuals and make them feel that all the action is actually happening.”

Managing director Aqeel Jawad Sultan said: “The Gold Class is the first-of-its-kind in the country and we are proud to offer Oman such world-class facilities. This is a step to provide customers a delightfully new and refreshing experience.”

On changes in the offing, Sultan said the management was looking at introducing mobile bookings and automatic seat blocking through SMS, besides introduction of kiosks at third-party locations, soon after the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Other plans include opening of the next multiplex, with three screens (595 seats), on the LuLu Hypermarket premises in Buraimi, shortly.  The three-screen multiplex (594 seats) is expected to be ready at the Salalah Tourist Complex before October-end.

Plans for the next two years include multiplex screens at two new locations in Muscat, he added.
