| Tunisia jet bombs 3 arms-laden cars |
TUNIS A Tunisian military plane destroyed three cars loaded with weapons that were being driven just north of the country’s southern border with Algeria and Libya, the official TAP news agency said on Thursday.
The plane attacked the vehicles after their occupants opened fire on it as it patrolled the southern zone of Satah Al Hassan 100 kilometres north of the triple border overnight Wednesday, TAP reported.
The defence ministry would not immediately comment on the report when contacted.
Tunisian news sites reported that the cars were loaded with arms from Libya and were crossing Tunisia to get to Algeria.
Arms trafficking has exploded in the region since the 2011 conflict in Libya that toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
In another development, prosecutors said that funds frozen in Swiss bank accounts are “linked to” a Tunisian politician suspected of embezzlement but are not his.
“Geneva Prosecutor Dario Zanni clarifies that...the assets frozen in Swiss bank accounts are ‘linked’ to Khayam Turki and not ‘in the name of’ the Tunisian politician,” said his office in a statement.
The announcement is an attempt to clarify recent contradictory media reports about who owns the assets.
Turki is a senior figure in Tunisia’s left-wing Ettakatol party. Turki denies the charges.
