| HM offers condolences on Nayef’s death |
MUSCAT His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said has sent a cable of condolences to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, of Saudi Arabia, on the death of Nayef Bin Abdulaziz, Al Saud, crown prince and deputy prime minister and minister of interior. His Majesty expressed his sincere condolences to Abdullah, his family and the Saudi people, asking God to bless his soul.
Earlier, a statement carried by the state media, including Al Ekhbariyah Television and SPA news agency, said Nayef ‘died outside’ Saudi Arabia having recently left the Gulf state for medical treatment.
His funeral would be held on Sunday after sunset prayers in the Holy City of Makkah, after his body is repatriated, it added.
The 79-year-old’s death came just eight months after he replaced his late brother crown prince Sultan.
“The new crown prince will be appointed by the allegiance council,” said Anwar Eshqi, head of the Jeddah-based Middle East Centre for Strategic Studies.
Nayef, who spearheaded Saudi Arabia’s clampdown on Al Qaeda following a wave of attacks in the kingdom between 2003 and 2006, became heir to the throne in October last year.
Nayef was a staunch defender of the Saudi dynasty.
